Permalink Late summer 2010, early dawn at Cape Cod. Took a walk along the beach from our hotel. Saw some action just within casting reach and tossed this Gibbs popper. Was hoping for bass to be prowling the area but only bluefish.
I’ve been fishing for bluefish since I was a little kid. I used to go out to a town bridge in Long Beach, LI. It was a 3-4 block walk to a family friend’s place. Spent many hours fishing for snappers during the summer months. Top of the bridge or under the bridge, snappers provided so much fun. Fast forward many years, and the start of surf casting. I never caught any bluefish, adult snappers, until a few years ago from the shore. Before then only a few party boat trips out of Captree State Park.
Lure: The pencil popper. There is nothing like seeing a big fish hit a top water lure. The sheer excitement of seeing your lure, a swirl behind it from a hit and miss, and then a hit! Yellow has always been the productive color for me.
